Jodi Picoult is a bestselling author of literary fiction, although many have called her books womens fiction. Shes an unusually  prolific author, having written over twenty novels. Jodi Picoults books are quick paced and controversial. Is the woman behind the books as provocative?   Born: May 19, 1966, in Nesconset on Long Island in New York. Family Life: Picoults family moved to New Hampshire when she was 13. Although she left New Hampshire for college and her early jobs, she settled there again as a married woman. She currently lives in Hanover, New Hampshire with her husband, Tim Van Leer, and their three children, Sammy, Kyle and Jake. She was raised in a non-practacing  Jewish household.   Education: Picoult studied writing at Princeton University, where she earned her bachelors degree. She also earned a masters degree in education from Harvard University. Writing: Picoult wrote her first story, The Lobster which Misunderstood, when she was five. While at Princeton, she published two stories in Seventeen magazine. She wrote her first novel, Songs of the Humpback Whale, while she was pregnant with her first child, and published it in 1992. Picoults novels usually deal with ethical issues and are told from a variety of viewpoints, with each chapter written in a different characters voice. Picoult uses this technique to show multiple sides of a situation and underscore areas of moral ambiguity. She has several reoccurring  characters, who have appeared in multiple books. While characters may make cameo appearances the books are not part of a series. All of her novels are stand alone titles.   She is known for her incredibly researched plots, many of which involve some kind of courtroom drama. The two have been friends since they were children. They are constantly playing pranks on each other and giving each other a hard time. When Ariel stops by Johns house for a surprise bathroom break at 1:30am Max gets jealous thinking that John is in a sexual relationship with the younger women. Max then pursues Ariel, bringing her flowers and taking her ice fishing. But Ariel says he is just a friend. That is when she begins to pursue John and after a romantic day playing in the snow the two have sex. Well John is tickled pink and is having the most fun he’s had in a long time. When Max finds out he lashes out at John. John figures that he won the first women they fought over and he breaks up with Ariel. Max chases her and the two spend time together but never anything romantic. Then John has a heart attack and Max finds him and calls for help. This is when Ariel comes back into John’s life. The movie skips ahead and we see John and Ariel getting married and the movie ends with the two of them driving away from the wedding. One of the stereotypes I first identified was the title Grumpy Old Men. It implies that old men are grumpy and unhappy with life. The movie goes on to show us that these two men are cranky by them fighting with each other and complaining about things like the price of fishing worms. Another stereotype is that old people are lonely. In the movie we see John playing chess by himself and heating up a TV dinner every night after a whole day spent alone in his fishing shanty. The two men liked to talk about dying and what the best way to go would be. This is a stereotype that goes along with older people liking to talk about their medical aliments. The two men complain about the different medical problems they have had and they try to outdo each other saying that their medical problem was way more painful than the other persons. The men also showed the noisy neighbor stereotype that older people get when they stood outside their houses watching Ariel move in and then talking about it with the rest of the town. Another stereotype is that old people aren’t very good drivers like when John ran into the trash cans all the time or when Max was too distracted to see the UPS driver in front of him. Then after narrowly missing an accident Max says â€Å"watch where you’re going. † One of the funniest characters in the movie was John’s dad. He embodied the classic old man pervert. When John would talk about Ariel he would tell John to â€Å"mount her. † Lastly another stereotype shown was that old men are impotent. Like when John and Max were making fun of their other friend saying he â€Å"couldn’t rise to the occasion. I can’t say that I think that any of the stereotypes are true or untrue. Some of the characteristics describe some older adults I know and some don’t. That is the thing about stereotypes they don’t fit the whole group. I do hold my own stereotypes about older adults but I try to work on not letting them affect my judgm ent of the person. All of the stereotypes I identified in the movie I hold especially about the men being perverted and impotent and that they like to talk about their medical problems. I’ve been to dinner with my Grandma and Grandpa before and all they can do is talk about this doctor’s appointment and that doctor’s appointment. So I’ve seen some of these stereotypes first hand. Yes my understanding of older adults has changed over the semester. I think that working with them and seeing that the stereotypes are not true has helped change my view. Pygmalion is an element of comedy in the sThere tory Pygmalion and in the film My Fair Lady. In the play and the film alike, a woman of the streets named Liza Doolittle is transformed from a dirty low-life from the streets to a respectable high-class woman in only six months by two wealthy gentlemen named Higgins and Pickering. Pickering challenged Higgings to make this young girl a respectable lady and this becomes the object of the story, which is filled with several comical scenes dealing with the changing lifestyle of Liza Doolittle. There are several humorous situations found in this play. Liza Doolittle's attitude is humorous in itself. She takes everything that Higgins and Pickering say to her seriously, even if they are only joking, for instance when Higgins referred to her as ?baggage? and asked his colleague Pickering if they should have her sit down or toss her out the window. Liza responded with her patented ?Ah-ah-ah-ah-ow-ow-oo-oo!!!? and quickly tried to get away from Higgins. There are several scenes like this throughout the play which I thought were all funny. Another scene I thought was humorous was the bath scene. Liza Doolittle, being a lady of the streets, had never taken a real bath before, and when she was asked to take her clothes off and get into the tub, she through another fit and made a huge fool out of herself. Even though this film and play were both made a long time ago, there are still parts of it that can still be considered funny by today's standards. Just imagining a bet between two distinguished gentlemen on whether or not they can change a woman from the streets into a woman of high class can be funny. A movie that this can be compared to today is Pretty Woman starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. In this movie, Richard falls in love with Julia and changes her from a woman of the streets to a decent and beautiful woman, much like Higgins fell in love with Liza Doolittle and changed her. Although the movie My Fair Lady made it big back in the past, I don't think that it would be very successful at the box office if it were to come out today because everyone's view of comedy has drastically changed from what it used to be. Comedy has lost its innocence, and this movie was too innocent to make it today. Movies such as American Pie and Big Daddy are what audiences want to see today because they portray people with serious problems in a funny way, and they don't hide anything in doing it, they make audiences laugh in a new way. In conclusion, I think that the play Pygmalion and the film My Fair Lady both have elements of comedy. There are some funny moments throughout both the play and the movie that would still be considered somewhat humorous, but I don't think that the movie would succeed in the box office today. Showing regard and concern about water shortage experienced in the South- East Queensland, this report is purposed to identify and propose two possible methods of supplying water in the arid areas of the South-East Queens land in Australia. The report will also analyze the cost effects of the two methods identified and propose the convenient method to be adopted first and the one to be adopted in th e process as the actual supply underway. The two methods that shall be addressed by this report will include water recycling and rainwater harvesting. Background The problem of water shortage in the South-East Queensland in Australia dates back about 100 years with the worst historical drought periods was lapsing between 1898 and 1903 (Colvin). However, 1974 offered slight compensation to the past periods of drought as the year experienced historic rains that led to yet historic floods that have never been experienced again in the region. According to Radcliffe (4), the statics of 2003 showing water provision depicted that about 414000ml was used in residential gardens, 183000ml used in laundry, kitchen used 61000ml, and bathroom consumed 317000ml. The 2003 statistics also indicate that the total volume of water consumed in residential was 1219000, industries and businesses consumed 437000ml, local government and its fire-fighters consumer total volume of 139000ml, system losses amo unted to 221000ml as errors in client meters amounted to 49000ml (Radcliffe 4). The contemporary society is a rather cruel environment. Salvador Dali, born in Spain in 1904, was one of world's most famous Surrealist artists. His work is popular amongst modern society as well as art enthusiasts and often interweaves bizarre and thought-provoking ideas with abstract images, many of these symbolising dreams and fantasies. His paintings explore the connection between reality and fantasy, and he once described his own work as "hand painted dream photographs". His exploration of fantasy and subconscious is pronounced clearly in "The Sacrament of the Lord's Supper", painted in 1955. The painting shows Dali's depiction of The Last Supper. Jesus is centred at the table with his twelve Disciples kneeling devoutly, with heads bowed, in perfect symmetry, as if two groups of six were mirroring each other on either side of Jesus. Above Jesus we see a transparent image of his own body. Dali painted this image to be interpreted by the individual in different ways. It represents both the literal Jesus; about to be betrayed and facing his arrest and crucifixion, and the spiritual Jesus; the belief in God and the faith that is present with Christians. A person with a non religious view would most probably see this as the literal sense of Christ, where as a Christian or otherwise religious person would be more likely to see both the literal and the spiritual representations. In the background, we are able to see a calm lake surrounded by barren hills. A mystical 'aura' of light rests in the centre of the landscape. Again, the interpretation of what this represents lies within the individual. It could merely be part of the beautiful Palestinian landscape, or it could be a holy aura of light emanating from Jesus, to represent his divinity. Dali presents us with a conflict of the literal reality and the religious mysticism, knowing that "only the eye of faith can pierce the veil of understanding". Situated in front of Jesus on the table are a broken loaf of ordinary brown bread and a glass of red wine. Many people have experienced this while listening to the 'Hallelujah Chorus' from Handel's 'Messiah'. In my opinion, the arts are one the best ways to express a religious idea, as I strongly believe that some things that can not be described verbally can be spoken through music or art. It seems to me that although conventional methods of worshipping a religion are successful in many ways, the arts can be a more effective way to express religious reasoning and help people to form their own conclusions about religion without encountering bias from people who already have strong religious, or anti-religious, views.

Young never knew the philosophy of life and children were busy with playing games only. Today, we can communicate with people in different countries within no time — thanks to telephone and email.. However, in the past it would take months to send message from one country to another or one place to another. Today, people possess knowledge about every layer within the earth whereas our forefathers living in the past were only familiar with well water. We can even touch the skies, thanks to the major strides that have been made in the field of commutation. The sky is the limit when it comes to development and progress in our age. We have overcome time and space and are covering large distances in a short span of time. While in the past people travelled on foot or in horse driven carriages now we have bullet trains and super sonic aero planes. On the other hand, we can say in that instance, while it would be unidiomatic to say on that instance. In his renowned A Dictionary of Modern English Usage, H. W. Fowler defined an idiomatic expression as one that is natural for a normal Englishman to say or write. He went on to say that idiomatic English is not necessarily grammatical or ungrammatical. Sometimes idiomatic usage agrees with stated rules, and sometimes it doesnt. The two, grammar and idiom, are two separate categories. Sometimes they agree, and sometimes they dont. It is not necessary to understand an idiom. It is only necessary to accept it. My beginning French students often exclaimed at French idioms like Jai 17 ans (literally, I have 17 years). They wanted to translate such constructions literally, and then complained that the result sounded ridiculous in English. I worked very hardusually unsuccessfullyto convince them that French is not some funny form of English. French is French, and in French, Jai 17 ans is correct and Je suis 17 ans is nonsense. Idiomatic expressions of every kind in Englsh are rapidly changing. Here are some examples from my collection of prepositional use in the media: living under borrowed time. One is lack of attention to teaching traditional literature and usage in the public school classroom. School administrators as a group do not value language instruction. Many of them laugh off their own grammatical errors or lack of familiarity with literary classics by implying that such matters are the concern of English teachers only. Few Americans read for entertainment. We are a film-oriented culture. Popular television shows like Seinfeld spread nonstandard regional usages such as waiting on line for waiting in line (in the sense of waiting in a queue). Popular attitudes about personal liberty equate linguistic correctness with elitism or social oppression. Finally, to some extent, the grammatical conventions of other languages find their way into English by way of our diverse population. In many ways a language shapes the thoughts of the people who speak it, but the speakers also shape the language. If enough people start saying or writing a certain expression, it will become idiomatic. The Stonehenge example above illustrates how idioms can change by analogy with other idioms. Language is going to change from generation to generation in any case. If it changes too rapidly, the traditional literature is lost. Few read Chaucer for fun anymore. Shakespeares works must be studied with a glossary. High school students struggle with Great Expectations, and some entering college students have trouble understanding the essays of George Orwell. Writers have a responsibility to read widely in the literature of the language in which they choose to write.
